What happens on a Family Sea Kayaking Weekend?

Our Family Sea Kayaking Weekend begins with a welcome meal on Friday evening and ends around 5pm on Sunday, when we wave you off feeling energised by your weekend of paddling in the Welsh wilderness. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be in the safe hands of our dedicated and friendly hospitality and adventure team who have lovingly curated every element of your Sea Kayaking weekend so that you can relax and spend time together as a family.

Embark on two full days out on the water with our friendly and engaging guides, launching at picturesque and sheltered harbours where you’ll learn gentle strokes to guide your boat confidently along an awe-inspiring stretch of coastline. Each day, we provide a delicious packed lunch for picnicking on remote secret beaches. Our guides weave in elements of sea swimming, snorkelling, coasteering and family team-building games as well as foraging and fun facts about flora, fauna and geology! Delve into stories of local history and mythology including pirates, smugglers, shipwrecks, sea monsters and the French invasion!

Minibus transport is provided to reach our close-by kayaking locations and all specialist kit and equipment is included in this holiday. We have a range of general purpose sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks, both singles and doubles, to suit all levels of experience and age-groups.

Where will I stay?

You’ll stay in our unique marshmallow-pink 5-star graded eco lodge accommodation, tucked into the folds of the Abermawr valley on the North Pembrokeshire Coast. Choose from a delightful range of single, double, twin and family rooms; we’re sure you’ll find your home-from-home.

From Friday evening to Sunday or Monday lunch, all your meals are provided in our restaurant by our in-house chef, using fresh ingredients, locally sourced or home-grown where possible. A full cooked Welsh breakfast will fuel you up for your morning adventure and a hot lunch will warm you up before the next one. In the evening, relax and unwind with a two-course evening meal and order a local brew or a “Merlyn’s Magic” hot chocolate at our reclaimed-timber bar. Our menu is deliciously varied and upbeat, with healthy, hearty meals catering for all special dietary requirements (as well as fussy eaters!).

The beautifully furnished and spacious restaurant and lounge offers views down to the ancient woodland and across a rolling pastoral landscape. Our sheltered courtyard provides outdoor seating with spectacular views down to the ocean and the Penbwchdy headland. Dine al-fresco with Nature’s soundtrack of ravens, choughs and woodpeckers echoing through the valley. There’s plenty of green space outdoors for ball games, including a volleyball pitch, and plenty to keep the whole family entertained indoors, with a pool table, table football and a bountiful box of board games!

Itinerary for a Family Sea Kayaking Weekend

Friday

PM: Arrive at the Preseli Venture eco lodge from 17:00, stretch your legs with a short walk down through the bluebell woods to Abermawr, our secluded local beach, and breathe the fresh sea air. Return and watch a spectacular sunset over the valley with a local brew in hand, bathed in the joyous dusk chorus of birdsong. Settle in with a delicious welcoming evening meal and fully relax, ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

Saturday

AM: After breakfast, get ready to explore a stretch of coastline by sea kayak, paddling under immense sea cliffs and gazing into the aquatic world beneath you. Crystal clear aqua-marine waters and clean Atlantic sea air are the backdrop to your voyage. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of gliding through remote rock gardens and let your imagination drift seamlesslesly into the rich and palpable history and mythology of this magical seascape, punctuated by cascading waterfalls and sculptural rock formations.

PM: One of the untouched secret beaches you can only reach by sea provides the perfect place for a pincic and perhaps a soothing sea swim as you warm your towel on a rock, before launching once more for an afternoon of paddling. The evening is yours to share stories, toast marshmallows over a bonfire and gaze at the bright night sky.

Sunday

AM: With the skills and confidence you built on your first expedition, head out to paddle a new route, exploring another stunning area of the coastline on your second sea kayaking experience. On this relaxed journey, you can really take your time watching a huge variety of sea birds from diving gannets to nesting razorbills, bobbing guillemots to fishing cormorants – the abundance of wildlife is incredible! You may be visited by curious seals or even spot pods of breaching dolphins and porpoise.

PM: Land for lunch in another peaceful haven and mull over mesmerising rock pools where ruby-red beadlet anemones sway, blennies dart between pebbles and winkle shells shimmer in the sun. Comb the tideline for a mermaid’s purse or sea-smoothed pottery amongst the driftwood. Then hop back in your boat and head back out for a final afternoon of paddling. We’ll wave you off in the late afternoon with a torrent of terrific tales to tell!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay mid week instead?

Yes. We welcome families during the mid week throughout the school holidays. You’re welcome to stay before or after this weekend break, or just come during any family holiday week.

Do you have any age restrictions?

You don’t need to have any experience to join our family adventures, you just need to be happy in the water and willing to give sea kayaking a go. We welcome children aged 8+ and have a minimum height requirement of 114cm.

What kind of kayaks will we use?

We have a range of kayaks to suit the needs of your family – from various sizes and designs of closed cockpit kayaks, through to single sit on tops and double sit on tops. We have a choice of paddle craft and can offer a flexible approach to your kayaking depending on the age and size of your family members, your previous experience, your personal preference and the all important weather conditions!

Where will our adventures take place?

We work closely with the National Trust and have access to a range of beautiful un-spoilt National Trust locations on the North Pembrokeshire coast. The location is always chosen on the day so that we can select the most suitable place taking into account the weather, tides and swell.

How big will our group be?

These trips run with a maximum of 10 sea kayakers at a time, who will be accompanied by our qualified, experienced sea kayak guides.

What will we need to wear?

We’ll provide you with a kayaking ‘long john wetsuit’ underneath which you’ll wear your own bathing suit with a t-shirt or fleece or thermal top. We’ll supply kayak jackets, buoyancy aids, wetsuit boots and a helmet so that you’ll be warm, safely floaty and well protected.
