Preseli Venture offer the British Canoeing’s star awards. The awards provide paddlers with a framework to develop essential sea kayaking skills and knowledge. Providing a foundation to progress to the next step in your sea kayaking career.
What’s a BC star award?
British Canoeing’s star awards are designed for paddlers aged 16 and over. The 1 and 2 star awards have been developed to encourage paddlers to experience the various types of paddlesport available. Paddlers can then ‘specialise’ in particular disciplines from the 3 star award onwards.

BCU 1 star award
The British Canoeing 1 star award can be taken in any kind of paddlesport craft, at Preseli Venture this might be a sit on top, a sea kayak, or an all-purpose kayak.
This is a flat water award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills including rescue skills and safety and risk awareness. The syllabus, training and award can usually take place over a number of sea kayaking sessions. You can find details of the BC 1 star syllabus on the BC website.
Who is the award for?
BCU 2 star award
The British Canoeing 2 star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact. You can find details of the BC 2 star syllabus on the BC website.
Who is the award for?
Suitable for an ‘improver’ paddler, ideally having already attained the BCU 1 star. You should already have experience of paddling in 2 different craft and have had experience of taking part in a water journey of up to 2 hours.
Preseli Venture offer the sea kayaking aspect of the award on our improvers sea kayaking weekends and holidays.
BCU 3 star award
Once a paddler progresses to the British Canoeing 3 star award the syllabus becomes discipline specific and is dependent on the type of craft that is used. Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves as an able and intermediate sea paddler, rather than a beginner. A 3 star paddler is defined as a competent group member, someone who has the skills to be a safe and effective member of a group, but not necessarily lead that group.
This course takes place in two distinct parts, a two day training course, followed by a one day assessment. These can be taken separately, or combined as a three day course.
Who is the award for?
This award will suit more experienced paddlers who need to complete the course as a pre requisite for further training and qualifications. The training content is suitable for anyone who wants to improve their sea kayak skills but who doesn’t intend to take the assessment. Please do view the syllabus on the BC website.
3 star sea candidates must:
- provide evidence of at least 3 different journeys on the sea, of about 3 hours duration (8 nautical miles) each
- a consistent BCU 2 star standard of performance in the appropriate craft
- the ability to swim confidently in the sea environment, wearing normal paddling clothes
- able to tackle moderate tidal conditions as part of a led group; which includes having the group awareness skills to be able to assist in the smooth running of such a trip
Preseli Venture offer the two day training and one day assessment on scheduled dates. Our flexible approach means we can tailor the training course to suit you and the areas you need to work on in order to reach the required standard for the assessment.

Spent three days taking a three star sea kayak course. The coaches and all the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Their knowledge of the area and kayaking second to none, extremely knowledgeable and inspiring.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to have completed the preceding BC qualification?
It is recommended, but not essential, to progress directly through the awards. Paddlers don’t need to hold the lower award before progressing onto the next award (other than at 5 star level).
Is accommodation included in the price?
The BC 1 and 2 star awards are a component of our sea kayaking weekends and holidays, which include cosy and comfortable 5 star graded eco lodge accommodation.
If you’re taking a BC 3 star award and need accommodation, we can offer you a stay at our eco lodge serving delicious home-cooked meals, so do contact us for more information, availability and prices.
Is this for adults only?
The BC star awards are designed for paddlers aged 16 and over. We can organise the BC paddlepower programme, a youth centred series on request. We also offer family sea kayaking holidays during school holidays.
Can I come with a group?
We welcome individuals and groups of paddling friends who would like to get some qualifications under their belt. The qualifications are also suitable for clubs and school groups and outdoor centre staff who need to gain higher level leadership awards.
