BCU 1 and 2 star awards
The BCU 1 star and 2 star awards can be taken in any kind of paddlesport craft, at Preseli Venture this might be a sit on top, a sea kayak, or an all purpose kayak.
You can find details of the BCU 1 star and 2 star syllabuses on the BCU website.
The BCU 1 star award
This award is designed to provide a framework for a paddlers first sessions – and the syllabus, training and award can usually take place over a number of sea kayaking sessions on many of our sea kayaking courses, for example on our At Sea with the Seals sea kayaking course, or our Odyssey sea kayaking holiday.
The BCU 1 Star is a flat water award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills including rescue skills and safety / risk awareness.
Who is the BCU 1 star course for?
This award will suit total beginners.
The BCU 2 star award
The BCU 2 Star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact. This award is suitable for an ‘improver’ kayaker, and can take place on one of our Rock and Roll improvers sea kayaking courses. Or also on our sea kayak Odyssey for those of sufficient standard.
Who is the BCU 2 star course for?
Paddlers should already have experience of paddling in 2 different craft and have had experience of taking part in a water journey of up to 2 hours.
Ideally they should also hold the BCU 1 star award.
NB This award is obtained by demonstrating performance in both a kayak and a canoe. The canoe element is not covered within a Preseli Venture course, but recommendations can be made for providers.
